Perro de Presa Canario HIstory
The Presa Canario is a majestic and powerful dog breed that hails from the Canary Islands, an archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, but belonging to Spain . The breed’s origins can be traced back to the 15th and 16th centuries when the islands required dogs that were strong, resilient, and versatile . The Presa Canario was bred for just these purposes . In 1991, the Presa Canario became an official national symbol of Gran Canaria.
The breed is believed to be a product of crossing native Bardino Majero dogs with large-size dogs brought to the islands by Spanish conquerors and settlers . These included Mastiffs, Bulldogs, and perhaps other breeds . This mix was aimed at creating a dog that was not only powerful but also had a strong guarding instinct .
Originally, Presa Canario were used as working dogs for various tasks. They guarded farms, helped in handling cattle, and even participated in securing and controlling stray dogs . Their strong build and fearless nature made them ideal for these roles . It is not suitable for everyone; it requires a knowledgeable and experienced owner who can provide proper training and socialization. It also needs regular exercise
The 20th century was not kind to the Presa Canario. With changes in agricultural practices and the banning of dog fighting, their numbers dwindled. By the 1960s, the breed was on the brink of extinction . In the 1970s, a group of enthusiasts from the Canary Islands recognized the cultural and historical importance of the Presa Canario. They embarked on a mission to revive the breed. This involved gathering the few remaining purebred dogs and starting a careful breeding program . The breeders focused on restoring the traditional characteristics of the Presa Canario — strength, bravery, a commanding presence, and a calm demeanor .
Today, the Presa Canario is a well-known breed, though still relatively rare compared to other mastiffs . They are recognized by various kennel clubs around the world and are celebrated for their imposing presence, balanced temperament, and loyalty.
